Hopeful Families BBO Press Release – May 2017

New grant to help families build hope in Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield

A partnership of six West Yorkshire voluntary and community organisations has secured a Big Lottery Fund and European Social Fund grant to help individuals from the regions most socially excluded families.

The first programme of its kind in West Yorkshire, ‘Hopeful Families’ will help over 620 individuals who are out of work to build their confidence and overcome the challenges they face in finding employment. The programme will be personally tailored to individual needs and will include help with personal development, health and wellbeing, and to develop life-skills including digital technology.

The programme aims to benefit local communities by reducing poverty and anti-social behaviour.

Dominion Employment Training Services and lead partner, Pluss, will begin to deliver the £2.4 million programme in June for the next three years alongside partners Yorkshire Children’s Centre, Halifax Opportunities Trust, Groundwork and NOVA.

Dominion is pleased to be part of the Hopeful Families programme as this will give us the opportunity to support the vulnerable and low-skilled individuals in our District, help them to overcome barriers and empower them to develop skills needed in the work place.

Pluss’ Chief Executive, Steve Hawkins, said “Hopeful Families will support hundreds of people across Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield to overcome a range of barriers and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

“Securing the funds to deliver this programme is a proud moment for all six organisations. Our partnership will deliver significant positive social change at a time when local devolution means West Yorkshire is taking on more responsibility for its own future.”

Hopeful Families has been co-designed over the past six months by people from local communities, and Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield Councils.

Hopeful Families is a new project jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund as part of the Building Better Opportunities programme.

The Big Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small, local projects.

It is responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised by National Lottery players for good causes. Last year it awarded £583 million and supported around 12,000 projects across the UK for health, education, environment and charitable purposes.

Since June 2004 it has awarded over £8 billion to projects that change the lives of millions of people.

The project has received over £2.4 million of funding from the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund as part of the 2014 – 2020 European Structural and Investment funds Growth Programme in England. The Department for Work and Pensions is the Managing Authority for the England European Social Fund programme. Established by the European Union, the European Social Fund help local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support skills development, employment and job creation, social inclusion and local community regenerations.
